History
18th August 1940 ‘The Hardedt Day’. Nine Dornier Do17s conducted a low-level raid on RAF Kenley causing significant damage to the hangers and surrounding buildings. The lead aircraft, F1+DT, was damaged by the parachute and cable defence system and subsequently brought down by Hurricanes of 111Sqn.
Known as the ‘Flying Pencil’, the Dornier Do 17z was designed as a fast bomber which could theoretically out run other fighter aircraft. Used extensively during the blitz in the skies over Kent, one Dornier which was shot down into the English Channel is now under conservation at RAF Cosford.
